Baking is a luxury few were able to enjoy.
But for those who could afford a wood-burning stove and to heat it, you would start with bread.
The better the quality, the higher up the social order you are.
We asked Professor John Walter from the University of Essex and Dr Sara Pennell from the University of Roehampton to take us through the history of baking.
