Sophisticated Sandwiches – 5 mouth watering fillings to try in September

Sandwiches have long been a staple lunch box item and if your school days were anything like mine, each recess meant digging into the lunch box to retrieve a Vegemite sandwich lovingly wrapped in wax paper. On a luckier day, it may have been a slice of leftover roast meat slapped between those two slices of bread and as long as it wasn’t a smear of Peck’s Paste I was happy.

The sandwich, of course, soldiers on but these days gourmet fillings are all the rage. When it comes to loading up a sandwich you’ll find with a bit of adventure and imagination it’s easy to create a magnificent and filling meal sure to please even the most discerning palettes.

Naturally, as bakers, we love our freshly cooked bread and nothing showcases a perfectly baked loaf than the sandwich! Because we’re always exploring ideas for interesting and mouth watering sandwich fillings, we thought each month we’d share five ideas to tempt you away from the Vegemite.

Here are this month’s favourite sandwich filling ideas….mmmmmmm enjoy!

These super sandwich ideas found over at Good Food  were our initial favourites from the 25 filling ideas they shared. To be honest, I’m sure some of the others from this site will find their way to our monthly lists as it was a tough decision indeed!

We’d love you to have a go at the following fillings and let us know what you enjoyed most….

1. Vegetable omelette with lashings of aioli. We think this would be deliciously wonderful on fresh white crusty bread.

2. Pulled pork with fennel slaw and jalapeno mayo. Not keen on jalapeno… well we’d consider swapping it for soy mayo with some caramalised onion throughout?

3. Cucumber, smoked salmon, cream cheese and egg. They’ve suggested on white but we think wholemeal with the crusts trimmed would be perfect!

4. Marinated steak and barbecue sauce on crusty rolls. I can’t think of a bloke who wouldn’t love this combo!

5. Roasted pumpkin, goat’s cheese, rocket and dukkah. Not only for vegetarians, this on a grain bread would be sensational!

Well, that is quite simple really!
