Coffee has a wonderful history as much as it is a delicious and heart-warming beverage.  Here are some very interesting facts and science about coffee that will delight you and expand your awareness of this revere bean.

Coffee cultivation first took place in southern Arabia.  It was in the middle of the 15th century when the earliest credible evidence of coffee-drinking appeared in the Sufi shrines of Yemen.

It was also recorded that in East Africa and Yemen, coffee was used in native religious ceremonies.

Coffee BeansPrior to the reign of Emperor Menelik II, the Ethiopian Church banned the secular consumption of coffee.  It was also banned in Ottoman Turkey during the 17th century for political reasons because the beverage was associated with rebellious political activities in Europe.  While the sixteenth-century Muslim rulers banned coffee because of its unusual stimulating effects.

Coffee was the first food to be freeze-dried.

The name cappuccino comes from the word capuchin which resembles this popular espresso drink to the clothing of the Capuchin monks.  The peak of foam atop the coffee drink looks like the long, pointed hoods of the Capuchin friar’s habit are known as cappuccinos. The word espresso literally means “when something is forced out” in Italian.

Today, 40% of the world’s coffee is produced by Columbia and Brazil. There are about 4,000 coffee beans are found in one kilo of roasted coffee.

The beans excreted by a Sumatran wild cat is called Kopi Luwak, and it is the world’s most expensive coffee; while the most common coffee are a blend of Arabica and robusta beans. Arabica varieties such as Java and Mocha are named after their ports of origin.
